Understanding ACA Affordability Standards
Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, financial assistance (subsidies) is available to help eligible individuals and families afford health insurance purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace. These subsidies aim to cap the percentage of your household income you are expected to pay for a benchmark silver plan.
The affordability standards are primarily based on your household income relative to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) for your household size. As of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the percentage of income you are expected to pay for a benchmark plan is significantly reduced, and there is no income cap for eligibility. Even those above 400% FPL may qualify for subsidies if benchmark plan premiums exceed 8.5% of their household income.
